Women’s health
Women’s Primary Care in Richmond, TX
Preventive visits, screening and everyday health care for adult women, with a female internal medicine physician and a team that coordinates with gynecology when you need it.

What is women’s primary care?
Women’s primary care is ongoing health care for adult women that covers prevention, screening and the everyday conditions that affect overall health, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid problems, bone health and mood.
At Lifecare Primary Medical in Richmond, women see Samira Khan, MD, an internal medicine physician, and our care team. We are a primary care practice, not an OB/GYN office: we do not provide pregnancy or obstetric care, and when you need gynecologic care we help coordinate it with a gynecologist.
What we cover
Health care for women at every adult stage

Yearly checkups with an exam, lab work as needed, and a review of screenings and vaccines.
Heart and metabolic health
Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and weight, which shape long-term heart risk for women. Blood pressure care
Thyroid conditions
Evaluation of fatigue, weight change and other symptoms, and management of thyroid disease.
Bone health
Risk review for osteoporosis and bone density screening when recommended.
Midlife and menopause

Sick visits
Same-day visits for infections, urinary symptoms, rashes and other everyday illness. Walk-in visits
Screening
Screening discussions for women
Screening recommendations depend on age and personal risk. Examples from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force include mammograms every two years for women 40 to 74, cervical cancer screening in recommended age ranges, colorectal cancer screening beginning at 45, and bone density screening for women 65 and older or younger women at higher risk.
At your visit we review which screenings you are due for, explain the options, and help arrange tests such as mammograms with the appropriate imaging center or specialist.

Working with specialists
When we coordinate with gynecology
Some women’s health needs are best handled by a gynecologist or obstetrician, including pregnancy care, many gynecologic procedures and certain abnormal screening results. In those situations we refer you to a trusted specialist, share your records, and continue to manage your overall primary care.
If you are pregnant or think you may be, please contact an obstetrician for prenatal care.
When to seek emergency care
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for severe abdominal or pelvic pain, heavy vaginal bleeding with dizziness or fainting, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or signs of stroke. Women’s heart attack symptoms can be subtle, such as unusual fatigue, nausea, or jaw, back or arm discomfort, so do not wait if something feels wrong.
