Preventive care
Preventive Care in Richmond, TX
Checkups, screenings and vaccine reviews that help you stay healthy and catch problems early, tailored to your age, health history and risk.

What is preventive care?
Preventive care is health care aimed at keeping you well rather than treating an illness you already have. It includes regular checkups, screening tests that look for conditions before symptoms appear, recommended vaccines, and advice on habits that lower your long-term risk.
At Lifecare Primary Medical in Richmond, preventive visits are led by Samira Khan, MD, an internal medicine physician, and our care team. We tailor each plan to the person in front of us instead of using one checklist for everyone.
What it includes
What a preventive visit covers
Health history review
Your personal and family history, medications, lifestyle and any changes since your last visit.
Exam and vital signs
Blood pressure, weight, heart and lung exam, and other checks based on your age and history.
Lab work
Tests such as cholesterol, blood sugar or A1C, and kidney function when they are appropriate for you.
Screening plan
Which cancer and other screenings you are due for, and help arranging them.
Vaccine review
Which vaccines are recommended for your age and health conditions.
Risk reduction
Practical guidance on activity, nutrition, sleep, alcohol and tobacco.
Screening
Screenings recommended for many adults
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) reviews the evidence and recommends which screenings help adults at different ages. Examples of current recommendations include:
- Blood pressure screening for all adults 18 and older.
- Colorectal cancer screening for adults 45 to 75.
- Breast cancer screening with a mammogram every two years for women 40 to 74.
- Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes screening for adults 35 to 70 who have overweight or obesity.
- Cervical cancer screening for women in recommended age ranges.
- Lung cancer screening for certain adults with a significant smoking history.
- Bone density screening for osteoporosis in women 65 and older, and in some younger women at higher risk.
Your own schedule depends on your history and risk factors. Some people need screening earlier or more often; others can skip a test. Your physician will explain the reasoning behind each recommendation.

Your physician
Samira Khan, MD
Board-Certified Internal Medicine Physician
Preventive healthcare, annual physicals and health screening are central to Dr. Khan’s practice. She believes the most effective care often happens before a problem becomes serious.
She is affiliated with Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital.
Vaccines
Staying current on vaccines
Adults need vaccines too, and recommendations change over time and with age. The CDC publishes an adult immunization schedule that covers vaccines such as influenza, Tdap, shingles, pneumococcal, hepatitis B and others. At your preventive visit we review your vaccine history and let you know which ones are recommended for you.
Getting the most from your visit
How to prepare
- Bring a list or the bottles of all medications and supplements you take.
- Know your family history, especially heart disease, diabetes and cancers in parents and siblings.
- Bring records of recent screenings, such as a colonoscopy or mammogram, done elsewhere.
- Ask whether you should fast before your visit if lab work may be drawn.
- Write down questions or symptoms you want to discuss.
Many insurance plans cover preventive visits. Coverage varies, so please call 281-712-7757 to confirm.

Common questions
Preventive care questions
How often should adults have a preventive checkup?
Many adults benefit from a yearly preventive visit. Your physician may suggest a different schedule based on your age and health.
Is a preventive visit the same as an annual physical?
They overlap. Both focus on prevention and screening. An annual physical is a common way to receive preventive care each year.
Can I talk about a health problem at a preventive visit?
Yes, though some insurance plans bill a separate problem-focused visit when a new concern is evaluated. Our staff can explain how your plan handles this.
Do I need to fast before my visit?
Some blood tests are more accurate after fasting. Call ahead and our staff will tell you whether to fast.
When should I start colon cancer screening?
The USPSTF recommends screening for most adults starting at age 45. People with a family history or other risk factors may need to start earlier.
