What is internal medicine?

Internal medicine is the medical specialty devoted to adults. An internal medicine physician, often called an internist, is trained to prevent, diagnose and manage the full range of adult health problems, from common illnesses to complex chronic disease. Many internists, including Samira Khan, MD, serve as their patients’ primary care doctor.

Lifecare Primary Medical is an internal medicine and primary care practice at 7103 South Peek Road, Suite 520, Richmond, TX 77407, seeing adults from Richmond and surrounding communities.

Internist or family doctor?

Internal medicine vs. family medicine

Both internists and family physicians provide primary care, and both can be an excellent choice. The main difference is who they are trained to treat.

Internal medicine

  • Cares for adults only.
  • Training centers on adult diseases, hospital medicine and chronic conditions.
  • Often a good fit for adults with several health problems or many medications.

Family medicine

  • Cares for patients of every age, including children.
  • Training covers pediatrics and other areas alongside adult medicine.
  • Often chosen by families who want one doctor for parents and kids.

Why adults choose an internist

Why see an internal medicine physician?

Adult health tends to get more connected over time. High blood pressure affects the kidneys and heart, diabetes affects blood vessels and nerves, and a medication for one condition can change another. An internist is trained to look at the whole picture instead of one problem at a time.

Adults often choose internal medicine when they:

  • Have two or more ongoing conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • Take several prescription medications and want them reviewed together.
  • Have symptoms that are hard to pin down, like fatigue, weight change or dizziness.
  • Want one physician to coordinate care with their specialists.
  • Simply want an adult-focused doctor for checkups and prevention.

Meet your internist

Samira Khan, MD

Board-Certified Internal Medicine Physician

Her practice centers on internal medicine for adults, including preventive health, annual physicals, and the long-term care of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. She is affiliated with Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital.

She works closely with our physician assistants and nurse practitioner, and with specialists in the area, so your care stays coordinated.

What we manage

Conditions commonly managed in internal medicine

These are among the conditions our team evaluates and manages for adult patients. When a condition needs specialist care, we arrange the referral and continue to follow you.

Heart and blood vessels

High blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease risk. See hypertension care and heart health.

Diabetes and metabolism

Prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, thyroid conditions and weight-related health concerns. See diabetes care.

Lungs and allergies

Asthma, seasonal allergies and recurring respiratory symptoms. See asthma care.

Kidney health

Monitoring kidney function, especially in adults with diabetes or high blood pressure.

Digestive symptoms

Reflux, abdominal pain, bloating and changes in bowel habits that need evaluation.

Mood and sleep

Screening for depression and anxiety, and help with stress and sleep problems as part of your overall health.

Complex care

Care for multiple chronic conditions

Living with more than one long-term condition is common, especially after age 50. Treating each one separately can lead to conflicting advice, duplicate tests and medications that work against each other. Internal medicine brings that care together.

Medication management

At regular visits we review every medication and supplement you take, check for interactions and side effects, and look for chances to simplify. Bringing your medication bottles to the appointment is the easiest way to make sure nothing is missed.

Monitoring and follow-up

Chronic conditions are managed over months and years. Depending on your health, that can include periodic lab work, blood pressure and blood sugar logs you keep at home, and follow-up visits timed to your needs. Learn more about chronic disease management.

Prevention

Preventive medicine for adults

Internal medicine is not only about treating illness. Preventive visits help find problems early, when they are easier to manage. We review your history, check blood pressure and weight, order appropriate lab work and discuss which screenings and vaccines are recommended for your age and risk, following guidance from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the CDC.

See preventive care and annual physical exams.

Care at every adult stage

Women’s health and care for older adults

Women’s adult primary care

Women see Dr. Khan for preventive visits, blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid and bone health, screening discussions and everyday health concerns. When gynecologic care is needed, we coordinate with a gynecologist. Some patients specifically prefer a female doctor, and we are glad to help.

Older adults

As we age, priorities shift toward keeping medications manageable, preventing falls, protecting memory and staying independent. Internists are well suited to this kind of care. Read more about care for older adults.

Working with specialists

When a specialist referral makes sense

Your internist can handle most adult health needs, but some situations call for a specialist, such as a cardiologist for certain heart rhythm problems, an endocrinologist for hard-to-control diabetes, or a gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy. When that happens, we explain why, help arrange the referral and stay involved so your care remains connected.

When to seek emergency care

If your symptoms could be life-threatening, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. This includes chest pain or pressure, severe shortness of breath, signs of stroke such as face drooping, arm weakness or trouble speaking, fainting, sudden severe headache, very high blood sugar with confusion or vomiting, or heavy bleeding. Our clinic is not an emergency facility.

Common questions

Internal medicine questions

What does an internal medicine doctor do?

An internal medicine doctor prevents, diagnoses and treats illness in adults. That includes checkups and screening, new symptoms and the long-term management of conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

Is an internist the same as a primary care doctor?

Many internists work as primary care doctors, and Dr. Khan does. Primary care is the role; internal medicine is the specialty training. Internists who practice primary care focus on adults.

Can an internal medicine doctor manage diabetes and high blood pressure together?

Yes. Managing related conditions together is a core part of internal medicine, and it helps avoid conflicting treatments.

Do internists see children?

No. Internal medicine is focused on adults. Families who want one doctor for children and adults often see a family medicine physician.

What kind of doctor should I see for several chronic conditions?

An internal medicine physician is a strong choice for adults with several chronic conditions, because their training centers on how adult diseases and their treatments interact.

Can I see an internist the same day?

Yes. We accept walk-ins and same-day visits Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Calling ahead at 281-712-7757 helps us prepare.

Where is your internal medicine clinic?

We are at 7103 South Peek Road, Suite 520, Richmond, TX 77407. We do not have offices in Katy or Fulshear, but many of our patients travel from those areas.
