What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways in the lungs. During a flare, the airways become inflamed and narrowed, which makes breathing harder and can cause coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. Asthma cannot be cured, but with the right treatment most adults can control it well and stay active.

At Lifecare Primary Medical in Richmond, Samira Khan, MD, and our care team diagnose and manage asthma in adults as part of primary care and internal medicine. Our clinic is at 7103 South Peek Road, Suite 520, Richmond, TX 77407.

Symptoms and triggers

Common symptoms and triggers

Asthma symptoms can come and go and may be worse at night or early in the morning. They include:

  • Wheezing or a whistling sound when breathing.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Chest tightness.
  • Coughing, especially at night, with exercise or with colds.

Common triggers include respiratory infections, pollen and other allergens, dust, mold, pet dander, smoke, strong odors, cold air and exercise. Many people in the Houston area notice symptoms change with the seasons. Knowing your triggers is an important part of control. Learn more about allergy care.

Evaluation

How asthma is evaluated

Your provider will ask about your symptoms, how often they happen, what sets them off and how they affect sleep, work and exercise. A physical exam follows. Lung function testing, such as spirometry, can help confirm the diagnosis and track control over time, and we will explain whether it is needed and arrange it.

Because some other conditions, such as heart problems, reflux or vocal cord issues, can cause similar symptoms, part of the evaluation is making sure nothing else is going on.

Your physician

Samira Khan, MD

Board-Certified Internal Medicine Physician

Dr. Khan’s practice focuses on internal medicine and chronic disease management for adults. She is affiliated with Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital.

Asthma often overlaps with allergies, reflux and other conditions; managing them together helps keep breathing steady.

Long-term control

How we help you manage asthma

Controller and rescue medicines

Understanding which inhaler is for daily control and which is for quick relief, and adjusting treatment as your needs change.

Inhaler technique

A quick check of how you use your inhaler. Small technique errors are common and can make a big difference.

Asthma action plan

A written plan that tells you what to do every day, when symptoms worsen and when to get emergency help.

Trigger control

Practical steps to reduce exposure to allergens, smoke and other triggers at home and work.

Vaccines

Respiratory infections can trigger flares, so we review recommended vaccines such as the flu shot.

Regular follow-up

Checking control at routine visits and stepping treatment up or down as needed.

Working with specialists

When we refer to a specialist

Most adults with asthma are managed well in primary care. We may refer you to a pulmonologist or allergist if your asthma stays poorly controlled despite treatment, if you need frequent steroid bursts or emergency visits, or if the diagnosis is uncertain.

When an asthma attack is an emergency

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you have severe shortness of breath, trouble speaking in full sentences, lips or fingernails turning gray or blue, confusion or drowsiness, or if your rescue inhaler is not helping. For a mild to moderate flare during office hours, walk in or call us the same day.

Common questions

Asthma questions

Can a primary care doctor treat asthma?

Yes. Most adults with asthma are diagnosed and managed in primary care, with referral to a specialist when asthma is hard to control.

What is the difference between a controller and a rescue inhaler?

A controller medicine is used regularly to reduce airway inflammation and prevent symptoms. A rescue inhaler works quickly to relieve symptoms when they happen. Your provider will explain how each of your inhalers should be used.

Can adults develop asthma?

Yes. Asthma can start at any age, including in adulthood.

How do I know if my asthma is well controlled?

Signs of good control include few daytime symptoms, no night-time awakenings, rarely needing your rescue inhaler and being able to stay active. If that does not describe you, schedule a visit.

Can I be seen the same day for a flare?

Yes, for mild to moderate flares we accept walk-ins and same-day visits on weekdays from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Severe symptoms need emergency care.
